Flag-Off Demonstration of Electric Motorcycle with Battery Swapping System Marks a Milestone in Malaysia’s Green Mobility Transition
This pioneering project is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and led by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) through the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC), serving as the national executing agency. The United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) acts as the GEF Implementing Agency.
A significant milestone was achieved with the Flag-Off Demonstration of the Electric Motorcycle with Battery Swapping System, officiated by Datuk Nor Yahati Binti Awang, Deputy Secretary-General for Environmental Sustainability at NRES. The event marked the official launch of an innovative initiative aimed at accelerating the adoption of sustainable transportation solutions in Malaysia.
The demonstration was a collaborative effort between MGTC and two prominent players in Malaysia’s electric vehicle ecosystem, RydeEV and Blueshark. These partners provided electric motorcycles and established a robust network of 29 strategically located battery swapping stations across the Klang Valley. This infrastructure supports seamless integration into daily operations, showcasing a practical and efficient alternative to traditional charging, while significantly reducing downtime for users. Running from 10 December 2024 to 9 February 2025, the two-month demonstration tested the battery swapping system under real-world conditions. A total of 40 riders participated, representing a diverse group of organizations including Zalora, Shopee, Foodpanda, Ions Technology, and the Petaling Jaya City Council. This broad participation—from e-commerce and food delivery services to municipal operations—highlighted the system’s adaptability and potential across various industries. The event was attended by over 90 participants, including government officials, industry stakeholders, and project partners, underlining strong support for Malaysia’s transition to low-carbon mobility solutions.
