UNU-IIGH: Systems Thinking for Health Systems and the Pandemic Recovery

This one hour webinar celebrates the launch of the book “Systems Thinking Analyses for Health Policy and Systems Development: A Malaysian Case Study”. This landmark book project initiated by UNU-IIGH discusses the importance of systems thinking for health systems, and its relevance to Malaysia. Additionally, the webinar will include speakers from the Alliance and UNDP Malaysia who will underscore the importance of the systems thinking approach, especially in the context of recovering from the COVID-19 pandemic.

About the organisers:

United Nations University International Institute for Global Health (UNU-IIGH)

UNU-IIGH, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia is the designated UN think tank on global health, serving as a policy translation hub for UN member states, agencies and programmes. It was established by a statute adopted by the Council of the United Nations University in December 2005.

The Institute generates policy-relevant analysis by applying a gender lens to inform the development, implementation and evaluation of health programmes. UNU-IIGH also supports the capacity development of local decision-makers and stakeholders to engage effectively with global health challenges within the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Alliance for Health Policy and Systems Research (the Alliance)

The Alliance promotes the generation and use of health policy and systems research as a means to strengthen the health systems of LMICs. As an international partnership hosted by the World Health Organization, the Alliance prioritises and promotes systems thinking, which recognises that the whole of the system is more than its constituent parts.

The Alliance also recognises the need to engage diverse actors and improve equity–targeting support to ensure better inclusion of and participation by women, those in low- and middle-income countries and other historically underrepresented groups.

UNDP Accelerator Labs

In 2019, UNDP built the world’s largest and fastest learning network on sustainable development challenges thanks to the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany and the Qatar Fund for Development as founding investors, and support from Italy and UNDP core donors.

The Accelerator Labs are designed to close the gap between the current practices of international development at an accelerated pace of change. They model a new capability to make breakthroughs on the future of development: inequality, decarbonization, the 4th industrial revolution and new forms of governance.
