This year’s theme for IWD 2021 is “Women in Leadership: Achieving an Equal Future in a COVID-19 World”.
International Women's Day (IWD) is a global day celebrated annually on every 8th of March to commemorate women’s achievements in social, economic, cultural and political spheres. IWD seeks to honor women’s accomplishments, increase awareness and understanding on women’s rights and equality, and calls various stakeholders to action to achieve gender parity.
This year’s theme for IWD 2021 is “Women in Leadership: Achieving an Equal Future in a COVID-19 World”. The theme is timely, in view of the challenges faced by women and girls across the world in facing the unprecedented global pandemic in modern times, and in highlighting the leadership role of women in rising above the challenges.
Based on the above theme, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia is pleased to announce the collaboration with United Nations in Malaysia and the Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (SUHAKAM) in organizing IWD 2021 celebration on 10 March 2021. This year’s IWD celebration aims to provide a platform for various stakeholders to exchange views, share best practices, and honor accomplishments by women in the country and abroad amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
IWD 2021 is also part of Malaysia’s efforts to showcase its progress towards gender equality in the country, in view of the country’s candidature to the United Nations Human Rights Council for the term 2022-2024.
